The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP, comprises 15 member states, namely the 10 ASEAN countries and their Plus 5 which consists of China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. RCEP member states were finally able to wrap up their longstanding negotiations, which had been ongoing since 2012, at the 37th ASEAN Summit held in Vietnam on November 15, 2020. The RCEP free trade pact has the largest economic framework, accounting for 31 percent of global GDP – and encompasses the largest consumer market with a total population of 2.3 billion people. Even so, RCEP still awaits ratification by the parliaments of at least six ASEAN countries and four of the Plus 5 countries, and it is expected to take effect during the second half of 2021. ... From February 1, 2019 onward, Japan’s car and auto-parts exports to the EU will enjoy gradual cuts in import tariffs under the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). KResearch views that since the EU will likely have to import more vehicles and auto-parts from Japan, Japanese carmakers may no longer need to further invest in the EU ahead, especially if the UK leaves the EU. On the contrary, they may increase investment in Japan or other countries having car production bases, such as Turkey, for export to the EU instead. Over the subsequent phase of their investment in car production for export to the EU, it is expected that Japanese carmakers will focus on electric vehicles after EU introduced measures to curb diesel-fueled cars, which have been blamed for creating air pollution. ... Thai exports to Cambodia have risen over the past decade (2008-2016), recording an average growth of 12.6 percent YoY, excluding exports of refined petroleum products and gold because those prices are volatile in nature. However, it is noteworthy that the growth rate over the past five years (2012-2016) had slowed to 2.2 percent YOY versus the 18.6 percent YoY pace recorded during 2007-2011. This trend likely reflects changes in Cambodia’s economic structure, and perhaps, some worrisome prospects for Thai exports toward competitiveness in the Cambodian market.... Read more
