US imposes a 10% tariff on Chinese imports and eliminates the ‘de minimis’ exemption for small packages (Business Brief No.4121 Full Ed.)

•    The 10-percent tariff is expected to be an initial rate that the US will impose on China. Chinese consumer goods are likely to be the most affected.

•    The US President has also revoked the “de minimis” exemption for goods valued at no more than USD 800 per person per day, a move which is expected to impact Chinese e-commerce companies.

•    Going forward, the US is likely to impose higher tariffs on Chinese goods. The extent of the tariff hikes will depend on negotiations and agreements between the US and China.
