Thailand on the world stage/ international economic cooperation : Regional Economic Cooperation

Overview

Thailand cooperates economically with other nations in the region within the following frameworks.

ASEAN: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was established on August 18, 1967 by Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Brunei. Four other nations have since joined, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia, bringing the total to 10. The combined population of the member countries is approximately 567 million. ASEAN aims to elevate the level of relationships and become the ASEAN Community, concentrating on three areas of cooperation: economic, socio-cultural concerns, and political stability.

BIMSTEC: The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation has seven member countries, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal. BIMSTEC has 13 areas of cooperation: trade and investment, tourism, fisheries, agriculture, transport and communications, energy, technology, public health, poverty alleviation, combating terrorism and transnational crime, environmental and natural disaster management, culture, and interaction among the various peoples.

GMS: Formed in 1992, the Greater Mekong Sub-region has six members, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Yunnan Province, China with a combined population of some 250 million. The nine areas of cooperation are transport, communication, energy, trade, investment, agriculture, the environment, tourism and human resource development.

IMT-GT: The Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle, founded in 1993, covers most of Sumatra, Indonesia, northern and western Malaysia, and southern Thailand: Ache, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, Real, and Jambi in Indonesia; Keda, Perak, Penang, Perlis, Selangor, and Kelantan in Malaysia; and Songkhla, Phattalung, Pattani, Narathiwat, Yala, Satun, Trang, and Nakhon Si Thammarat in Thailand. The six areas of cooperation are trade and investment, agriculture and agroindustry, the environment and tourism, infrastructure and transportation, human resource development, and halal products and services.

ACMECS: The Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy has five member countries, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand. The six areas of cooperation are public health, trade and investment, tourism, agriculture and agroindustry, transportation routes, and human resources development.
