Surging Thai Fruit and Product Exports in 2008: Up over 30 Percent (Business Brief No.2218)

คะแนนเฉลี่ย
Since 2007, Thailand's exports of fruit and products have increased at an average of 12 percent annually. In 2008, KASIKORN RESEARCH CENTER (KResearch) projects that Thai fruit and product exports may increase by some 30 percent over-year to total around USD2 billion. This growth rate is quite good. Among the major export markets are China, Hong Kong, the US, the European Union, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The expansion is attributed to numerous favorable factors, e.g., the government's strategies of promoting Thai fruit globally, plus the establishment of FTA agreements, especially the ASEAN-China FTA and Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA), the opening of the Thai fruit market in the US, the US cancellation of anti-dumping measures on Thai canned pineapple effective from April 21, 2008, which would be applied retroactively to October 31 last year as well as more border trade between Thailand and other ASEAN countries. In addition, the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games slated for August 2008 will be a plus for Thai fruit exports.

However, the Thai fruit industry is still beset with production and marketing-related problems. In fact, the measures recently implemented by the government to help in fruit market management are deemed appropriate for the long-term. Strengthening cooperation between the government and the private sector is needed to ensure that supplies will meet demand and thus avoid price slumps in times of oversupply. Focus should also be on production improvements to reduce trade barriers, especially the imposition of trade protectionism by our trade partners as well as marketing campaigns all-year-round to bolster the Thai fruit presence in global market – a stepping stone to flourishing Thai fruit exports in the future.
