New Year SMS Greetings: Expected to Drop amid Social Network Popularity (Business Brief No.3016)

คะแนนเฉลี่ย
According to a survey on behavior in sending New Year SMS greetings conducted by KResearch, it was found that 71.2 percent of respondents preferred sending greetings via their mobile phones, although the tendency this year was not as high as what was seen last year. Regarding the ageof the respondents, only 32.4 percent were aged 20-29 (early working age) who preferred sending New Year greetings via mobile phones. The overall percentage had decreased significantly over-year likely because ‘Gen Y' respondents are now quite familiar with other new technologies.
This group of respondents is interested in social networking. As a result, the number of social networking users has expanded very fast. At present, there are more than 6.5 million Facebook members and that figure will likely be higher. The majority of Facebook fans are aged 18-34, accounting for 75 percent of all Facebook members.
The changing behavior of younger generations toward this phenomenon will spur the popularity of greeting messages via social networking sites and facilities during many festivals such as New Year due to lower cost (only Internet access is required).

In addition, it was found that respondents expecting to send New Year greetings via mobile phones preferred sending SMS rather than MMS. Around 81.2 percent of the respondents indicated that they preferred sending only SMS for New Year wishes, while 14.6 percent told that they preferred both SMS and MMS for New Year salutations, while the remainder, 4.3 percent, said they preferred MMS. The majority expressed a preference for SMS over MMS because SMS can be sent from even the most basic phones, and the service cost is cheaper than for MMS service. As a result, SMS will likely be the top choice for consumers in sending this New Year's salutations via mobile phones.
