Mobile Phones, 2012: Market Turnover Topping THB170 Billion, Boosted by Data Service Jumping Around 38% (Business Brief No. 3239)

คะแนนเฉลี่ย

Mobile phone business is expected to show brighter growth prospects in 2012 thanks to the expansion of existing 3G network coverage nationwide, plus a higher number of 3G users and the proliferation of smart phones and tablets as well as new mobile content launched by service providers and content developers for the 3G regime.

These supportive factors should give rise to a wireless high-speed data communication era in 2012, wherein data service via mobile devices will be actively used, especially by the new generation.

KResearch forecasts that the mobile phone market may grow 8.1-10.3 percent to reach THB178.30-181.90 billion, compared to THB164.90 billion in 2011. Of this, data service should amount to THB46.6-48.2 billion, an increase of 33.6-38.1 percent YoY, whereas voice-based services may grow around 1.3-2.8 percent.

For the mobile network market in 2012, given the apparent investment plans and competition, close attention should be paid to progress on the preparation of a master plan for broadcasting business and associated spectrum policies, as well as the auctioning of 3G-2.1GHz licenses and the clarity of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) Act, Section 46, regarding permits for operation of MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator).
