Shrimp Products, 2007: Price Crisis at Home…But Exports Bright (Business Brief No.2008)

คะแนนเฉลี่ย
Early this year, Thailand's shrimp industry was beset with a slump in prices, in particular on smaller sizes. Nose-diving prices were attributed to shrimp farmers' increased production to meet rising exports. Due to climatic problems, most of the yield was of small size. Smaller farms have been in trouble because of an oversupply, which then caused prices to fall below production costs. As a way out, the government – in cooperation with the private sector – has launched a campaign to increase shrimp consumption. It is thus expected that the supply of shrimp will likely drop in 2H07, causing the full-year shrimp output to fall lower than earlier expected.
However, exports of shrimp products may continue to grow in 2007, albeit at a slower pace due to the stronger Baht that has affected competitiveness. On the plus side, however, demand for Thai shrimp products from key trade partners will help cushion negative impacts, somewhat. Consequently, exports of shrimp products for 2007 may total USD2.5 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9.6 percent.
