The impacts of increasing frequency and severity of climate change on Thai agricultural and food exports
- The growing frequency and severity of climate change have led to the volatility and risk of shortages in Thailand's agricultural output. This may in turn hurt the production chain as a result of rising raw material costs.
- More stringent trade measures implemented by Thailand’s key trade partners, including the EU and the US, have made it increasingly difficult for Thai agricultural and food businesses, especially those exporting processed fruits and vegetables, as well as seafood and processed meat products, as they rely heavily on exports (over 50 percent of production).
- If these businesses do not adjust to climate change, the share of Thailand’s agricultural and food export value may decline to less than 15 percent of Thailand’s total export value, exacerbated by eroding competitiveness and the fact that some entrepreneurs have invested closer to export markets.
