Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from hotels in Thailand are found to be high compared to those of other Asian countries (Current Issue No.3460 Full Ed.)

• Thai hotel operators must quickly adjust to the increasing demand for sustainable hotel services, including competitions from many hotel chains while partners that have already begun sustainable initiatives.
• In the transition of Thai hotels towards sustainability, the government should play a more significant role. This could involve establishing a dedicated agency responsible for directly addressing this issue and establishing internationally recognized standards, introducing short-term tax measures, including tax deductions, for hotel investments or upgrades that help reduce GHG emissions, plus for infrastructure investments such as in renewable energy to help hotel operators reduce costs.
