We at KResearch expect that spending by Bangkok residents will reach approximately THB13.15 billion, shrinking 3.0 percent YoY, during the upcoming Chinese New Year. That amount of spending includes THB5.9 billion on votive offerings, THB3.75 billion on traveling and merit making, plus THB3.5 billion on cash as gifts. A key factor pressuring their spending is ebbing purchasing power, so Bangkok residents intend to make the steepest spending cut on traveling and merit making, followed by cash as gifts and votive offerings. During the back-to-school season, consumers with school-age children normally have higher expenditures associated with their children’s education. KResearch’s survey finds that over 54.2 percent of parents are concerned about the amount of their cash flow to spend during the 2019 semester; however, the rate is lower than the result from the last year’s survey. The sample groups are worried about their financial liquidity for many reasons, including insufficient savings, increased daily expenses, more expensive educational supplies, and the fact that some of these parents have more children attending school. It is worth noting that around five percent of respondents who are concerned about their finances said their main source of funds for their children’s education comes from loans and pledging their valuable items.... Amid uncertainties due to a looming trade war over the past 2-3 months, Thai exports in May 2018 grew for a 15th straight month by 11.4 percent YoY, reaching or USD22.257 billion and driving Thailand’s outbound shipments in the first five months (Jan-May) of 2018 to increase by 11.6 percent YoY. The export rise in May is attributed to an ongoing recovery of the global economy, a sharp increase in global crude oil prices in May and higher rice and tapioca-product prices, when compared to the levels registered in the same period last year. ...
