- The Thai stock market dropped for third consecutive weeks due to concerns over US tariff policy.
The SET rose briefly early in the week before falling sharply until the middle of the week amid concerns about trade wars, as President Donald Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on the European Union (EU) on the grounds that talks between the two sides were “going nowhere” (although the tariffs were postponed from June 1 to July 9). Meanwhile, trade talks between Thailand and the US also remained unclear, further pressuring Thailand’s economic outlook. Additionally, various stocks faced heavy selling, particularly those of a major bank due to its major shareholder offloading stake.
The SET recovered briefly during the week in line with other regional bourses, boosted by the news that the US Court of International Trade blocked reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Trump due to judicial overreach. However, the US appeals court later allowed President Trump's sweeping tariffs to remain in place, which caused the SET to decline towards the end of the week. Additionally, the SET faced further pressure from portfolio adjustments following the MSCI Rebalance, effective May 30, and profit-taking ahead of the long holiday of domestic market.
