The Baht weakened, while the SET fell on foreign and domestic institutional investors’ sell-offs

คะแนนเฉลี่ย
  • The SET closed below 1,200 points even as it was boosted by news regarding the US-China trade talks early in the week.
The SET rose early in the week in line with other bourses, boosted by the news that US and China have reached a temporary trade agreement on May 12 to drastically roll back tariffs on each other’s goods, which eased investors’ concerns about a trade war and stimulated the purchases of various stocks, particularly those in the technology and energy sectors.
However, the SET tumbled later after having responded to such positive factor, facing sell-offs of various stocks, particularly those of banking stocks, energy stocks (affected by falling global energy prices) and stocks of an airport operator (due to the disappointment quarterly performance results). In addition, the SET was dragged by sell-offs of matured LTFs that were not transferred to Thai ESGX funds. The SET moved within a narrow range at the end of the week despite the news that Thai Commerce Minister held talks with the US Trade Representative, as investors were cautious ahead of the announcement of Thailand’s GDP report on May 19.

  • On Friday, May 16, 2025, the SET closed at 1,195.77 points, down 1.25% over-week. The average daily trading value was THB44,122.66 million, down 2.63% over-week. The mai closed at 248.08 points, down 2.43% over-week.
  • May 19-23, 2025, KSecurities expects the SET to have support at 1,185 and 1,165 points, but resistance at 1,220 and 1,230 points, respectively. KResearch advises investors to watch key factors, including Thailand’s GDP report for 1Q-2025, trade negotiations between US and its trading partners, and foreign fund flows. The US economic data that warrant close monitoring include May Manufacturing and Services PMI (Flash), April Existing Home Sales, plus Weekly Jobless Claims. Close attention must also be paid to April CPI of Eurozone, UK and Japan, May Manufacturing and Services PMI (Flash) of Japan, Eurozone and UK, China’s May LPR and April economic data such as Industrial Production, Retail Sales, and Fixed Asset Investment.
