The Baht extended gains while the SET rebounded somewhat after hitting its lowest level in 3 years and 9 months

•    The SET tumbled early in the week before recovering somewhat at the end of the week.
The Thai stock market dropped nearly 40 points and hit its lowest point in 3 years and 9 months at 1,273.17 points early in the week in line with foreign stock markets, which dropped on concerns about the US economic outlook due to the weaker-than-expected US labor market data. This negative factor caused sell-offs of stocks across all sectors.
The SET began to gradually recover around mid-week in line with other regional stock markets, as investors were less concerned over the US economic outlook, after Fed officials expressed that the US is not headed for recession. Moreover, the SET was boosted by purchases of several stocks, especially those in the telecommunication sector on the better-than-expected performance results and dividend announcement, and in the energy sector amid rising global oil prices. However, the SET’s gains were capped at the end of the week due to the long weekend while investors were still closely monitoring domestic political issues next week.

•    On Friday, August 9, 2024, the SET closed at 1,297.07 points, down 1.22% over-week. The average daily trading value was THB43,273.51 million, up 8.27% over-week. The mai closed at 312.00 points, down 3.27% over-week.
•    August 12-16, 2024, KSecurities expects the SET to have support at 1,290 and 1,280 points, but resistance at 1,310 and 1,320 points, respectively. KResearch views that key matters to watch include Fed officials’ remarks, domestic political issues, Thai listed companies’ performance results for 2Q-2024, and foreign fund flows. The US economic data that warrant close monitoring include July PPI, CPI, Retail Sales, and Housing Starts, plus Weekly Jobless Claims. Close attention must also be paid to GDP report for Q2-2024 of Eurozone, UK and Japan, June Industrial Production of Eurozone and Japan, plus China’s July economic data such as Retail Sales, Industrial Production and Fixed Asset Investment.
