Imports of garlic and onions from China are expected to increase, with Thailand remaining largely dependent on China as the main supplier. During the first four months of 2026, Thailand is projected to increase imports of garlic from China by 13.2% to 40,000 tons, and onions by 5% to 19,200 tons. The key driver is that Chinese prices are around five times cheaper than those in Thailand, reflecting China’s economies of scale, supported by large cultivation areas, lower production costs, and year round production.
