Unlocking monitor lizard breeding: Opportunities for sustainable Thai exotic leather products

  • The Wildlife Conservation and Protection Committee has added the water monitor lizard to the list of species that licensed operators are allowed to breed. Breeders must purchase parent stock from the Department of National Parks at a price of 500 baht per animal, opening the opportunity to create commercial value in the future.
  • The water monitor lizard holds significant economic potential, including leather products, meat for consumption, and value‑added medicinal and health supplement products.
    In the leather segment alone, Thailand's export value of all processed leather products reached approximately 7,554 million baht in 2024.Water monitor lizard leather is expected to generate higher value than cattle or buffalo leather, with an average price ranging from 4,200 to 14,000 baht per square meter.
  • In addition, water monitor lizards do not emit methane from digestion, unlike cattle or buffalo. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 1.4–3.4 tCO₂eq per animal per year, which may help future water monitor lizard leather products achieve a lower carbon footprint, compared to other types of leather.
