Thanks to the improvement of the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the return to normal economic activity, and the government’s stimulus packages to boost domestic tourism, the local tourism this year has been marked by an increase in the number of Thai tourists. Based on preliminary data compiled by KResearch, the number of domestic trips by Thais during the first 10 months of 2022 has reached approximately 118.9 million, growing by 278.2 percent YoY. Domestic travel is expected to become more active during the last two months of the year.

According to a survey of Bangkok residents’ travel plans for the last two months of 2022, the findings showed that 3 out of 4 of the sample groups planned to travel, with the majority (91.85 percent) opting for domestic travel and natural attractions like mountains/hilltops remaining the most popular destinations. The top five provinces include Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan (Hua Hin), Nakhon Ratchasima (Khao Yai) and Phetchabun, all of which are the main tourist cities for Thais. Additionally, the survey results reflected that more Thai tourists shifted to visit secondary provinces such as Nan, Lamphun, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Uthai Thani, Chanthaburi, etc. Based on such information, KResearch projects that Thais will make around 31.9 million domestic trips during the last two months of this year, a 6.8% increase from the same period of last year. However, the survey results also showed that COVID-19 remained a concern and may affect changes in travel plans. For the budget for overnight trips, it was also found that 27.5% of the respondents planned to spend THB3,001-4,500 person/trip, 25.9% planned to spend THB1,501-3,500 person/trip, and 22.4% planned to spend THB4,501-5,500 person/trip, which was roughly the same level of spending as before the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, looking at the COVID-19 pandemic that occurred in early 2022, purchasing power has not yet fully recovered, as well as the flooding that occurred in many regions in September-October 2022 also affected domestic tourism. Given this, the number of domestic trips for the year 2022 is projected to reach 150.8 million, an increase of approximately 183.9% from 2021. Domestic trips by Thais are around 87% of the 2019 (pre-pandemic) figure. Meanwhile, the total domestic tourist expenditures for the year 2022 is projected to be around THB 630 billion, an increase of 149.1% from 2021.
