Thailand aims to host the SEA Games 2025 as the first carbon-neutral edition.

  • Approximately 70–80% of CO₂ emissions from major sporting events typically come from participant and athlete travel. For the 2025 SEA Games, the number of participating athletes is expected to be its highest level ever, at around 12,500. This makes it essential for Thailand to significantly reduce emissions from other sectors and subsequently offset the remaining carbon emissions through carbon credits after the event.
  • To reduce CO₂ emissions, Thailand's SEA Games will focus on two key sectors: (1) venues and materials, and (2) energy use and transportation. Measures include prioritizing the use of existing venues, providing water refill stations to reduce plastic bottle consumption, implementing effective waste management and recycling systems, using electric vehicles for athlete transportation, strengthening public transport options, and promoting carpooling for event attendees.
