Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): The Global Demand-Supply Gap and Thailand’s Role
  • Aviation regulators worldwide have begun to introduce rules regarding the targets for mandatory proportion of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that airlines must meet by 2025. In the European Union, the required proportion is set at 2 percent, while regional targets are lower, such as 1 percent for Singapore and a proposed 1 percent for Thailand by 2025.
  • Global supply of SAF falls far short of demand. The European Union needs to scale up production capacity by more than 40 times to achieve its initial SAF targets.
  • If Thailand’s in-progress SAF production plant can secure the expected raw material supply, it will be able to provide airlines based in Thailand sufficient SAF for use until 2030.
