Tropical rainforests: A key issue for COP30 in 2025 (Current Issue No.3618 Full Ed.)

คะแนนเฉลี่ย
  • At the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), a new issue concerning the involvement of tropical forests will be pushed as a key topic. This will elevate Thailand’s role through its participation in establishing the Coalition of the Three Basins among the Amazon, Congo, and Southeast Asia.
  • COP30 will serve as a platform to push for a minimum forestry carbon credit price of USD 30-50/tCO2eq, which is approximately 4.25 times higher than the current trading price in Thailand. Thailand has the potential to generate approximately 20-30 MtCO2eq of carbon credits per year.
  • Given this, Thailand should seize this opportunity to leverage its forests as a negotiation tool to gain access to new forest finance mechanisms, namely the Tropical Forest Finance Mechanism. The country should also develop regulations and standards to facilitate entry into international carbon markets.
