Commercial banking business grew in 3Q2022 due to the gradual economic recovery after the easing of lockdowns

The gradual recovery of economic activities after the easing of lockdowns helped drive growth in the core business income of commercial banks during 3Q2022, both interest income and fee income. In the third quarter of this year, loans continued to grow, especially high-yield loan portfolios, which improved the net interest margin (NIM). As for asset quality, the ratio of non-performing loans (NPLs) decreased as commercial banks proactively managed debt issues by ongoing debt restructuring for their borrowers as well as the sale of NPLs and bad debt write-off.

As the trend of interest rates has begun to rise after the MPC meeting at the end of September 2022, commercial banks’ interest rates will increase along with the policy rate hikes. This will support the NIM of Thai commercial banks to continuously increase in the last quarter of 2022.
