“Highlight selling points, create strong points, adapt to the environmental protection trend” adjustment opportunities for tourism operators

คะแนนเฉลี่ย

Changes in consumers as a result of global awareness and concern for environmental issues has necessitated adjustments in the travel industry to better meet consumer needs and environmental trends for tourists. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has also prompted tourists to pay more attention to eco-friendly tourism through a sustainable tourism model. According to the Sustainable Tourism Report 2021, 78% of the 968 Thai respondents wanted more sustainable tourism in the future. They worry that traditional travel patterns will cause single-use plastic waste (46%), wildlife habitat encroachment and deforestation (38%), overcrowding (30%), and greenhouse gases (29%). These are all issues that the world attaches great importance to and actively cooperates to solve.

In addition, tourists also believe that tourism-related agencies can also take actions to promote sustainable tourism such as utilizing key cards or sensor systems to reduce electricity consumption, providing tourists with sufficient information and guidance to protect local ecosystems, and providing options to reduce housekeeping and conserving water resources, and using reusable cutlery. These are all things businesses have done to reduce costs and thus benefit business performance. At the same time, hotels can attract customers interested in sustainable tourism to generate higher income through recognized actions such as signing the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge to obtain the hotel logo for promoting sustainable tourism and culture, thus declaring its commitment to environmental protection to the world by reporting its progress annually to UNESCO. To date, about 4,200 hotels around the world have signed the manifesto, including about 600 in Thailand.

The government also plays an important role in promoting sustainable tourism. For example, the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) (Public Organization) has promoted the development of designated sustainable tourism areas in many places, including Koh Chang, Chiang Mai Night Safari, Pattaya, Sukhothai - Si Satchanalai - Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, Loei, Nan old city and U-Thong Ancient City. The number of tourists received by the province where these places are located accounted for 14% of the total number of tourists in the country, and the revenue generated accounted for 16% of the total tourism revenue in the country. In addition, other regions are also being developed according to the standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), which is comprehensive in many dimensions, including the dimension of environmental sustainability that is a concern of tourists due to traditional travel patterns. In addition, Nan old city and Sukhothai Historical Park were also selected as parts of the world’s “Top 100 Global Sustainable Destinations 2021”.

In addition, the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP) has also launched a green hotel program, which encourages hotels that need to be certified to use resources and energy efficiently, conduct good pollution and environmental management, contribute to local development, improve environmental service standards, and provide tourists with the opportunity to choose services. The hotels that meet the corresponding standards will receive the G-mark certification with three levels of gold, silver and bronze, and the certificate is valid for three years. At present, 528 hotels have become green hotels and have received the G-mark certification.

All in all, actions to create sustainable tourism through collaboration will have a positive impact on the tourism industry, raising awareness and engaging all relevant sectors in efforts to reduce environmental problems, as well as enabling the private sector to meet environmental needs by transitioning to a sustainable tourism model. This will help attract more tourists, especially those who want to contribute to reducing environmental problems and are willing to pay higher prices for products and services that help alleviate environmental problems, which will encourage them to travel and generate more revenue for businesses and communities by reducing environmental costs when the tourism situation returns to normal.
