  • PM2.5 pollution remains a major recurring public health concern each year. One of the key sources of PM2.5 in Bangkok is vehicle exhaust emissions, particularly from older vehicles aged over seven years. In 2026, the number of such vehicles in Bangkok is expected to increase by 3.3%, reaching approximately 4.83 million units. Of these, around 2 million are older diesel-powered vehicles, which emit significantly higher levels of PM2.5 than other vehicle types.
  • From the perspective of KResearch, three preliminary approaches may help mitigate PM2.5 pollution in Bangkok: promoting greater adoption of XEVs; implementing stricter enforcement and penalties on high-emission vehicles; and considering a vehicle scrappage scheme (“new car for old car"), which could serve as an additional policy option.
