Amid the global green trends, many countries have imposed environmental measures and have increasingly started to use eco-friendly plastics (recycled plastics / bioplastics) to replace fossil-based plastics. Such actions have affected Thailand’s plastic resin industry, which still relies mainly on sales of fossil-based plastic pellets. Even though some Thai operators have begun to shift to investment in production of eco-friendly plastic resins, their adjustments continue to lag behind changes in the global market.... Read more

Amid the current global green trends, Thailand’s polylactic acid (PLA) exports have gradually increased at a faster rate than growth in global PLA demand over the years. The rise is primarily attributable to the fact that Thai PLA producers have been able to bolster their annual manufacturing capacities through production line modifications while global PLA supplies have remained tight. ... From January 1, 2020, Thailand has begun a campaign to ban single-use plastic bags under the Plastic Waste Management Road Map 2018-2030 of the Pollution Control Department. KResearch views that the ban will significantly reduce the amount of single-use plastic bags. It will affect supply chains of the plastic bag industry but create opportunities for other substitute merchandise.... Read more

Thailand has so far relied on the imported materials for medical equipment production such as high-quality catheters, even though the Thai plastic industry is regarded as having a solid base throughout the supply chain. However, Thailand’s upstream and midstream manufacturers have focused on products with low added value. Meanwhile, the demand for high quality medical devices has increased due to an increasing application of technology in medical procedures. For example, vasodilation and small incision surgery can be done at a lower fee while modern healthcare treatment is easily accessible and trusted by patients. Nonetheless, amid the ongoing environmental campaign against plastic trash, global plastic consumption is set to reduce significantly. An upgrade of the quality of Thai plastics by focusing on the production of medical grade plastic materials will provide a business opportunity for operators in plastic resin manufacturing and injection molding for healthcare in the future.... The “Green business trend” has prompted many countries to introduce campaigns to reduce the use of plastics which are not easily degradable, especially single-use plastics for food and beverage packaging. Therefore, renewable materials, namely bioplastics have seen a rapid growth with an average compound growth rate (CAGR) of 30 percent versus an annual growth rate of conventional plastics of only 3 percent. KResearch views that polylatic acid (PLA) pellets will substitute for the use of plastics derived from petro-based polymers in the production of food and beverages packaging and the bioplastic market will be expanding from Europe and the US to the Asian region, driven by the movement to reduce the use of plastics and to change consumer behavior....
