Thai HDD exports in 2019 are poised to top 250 million units following the rebound in the global computer market and a string of production relocations to Thailand. (Current Issue No.2949)

Thai hard disk drive (HDD) exports in 2019 are expected to continue growing, driven by a boom in computer HDD exports. KResearch estimates that overall HDD exports in 2019 will reach around 252 million-262 million units, increasing between 3.6 and 7.8 percent when compared to 2018, equivalent to USD12,576 million-USD13,089 million, up 0.9-5.0 percent over-year. The strong export performance is attributed to the global computer market recovery, the consolidation of production bases from Malaysia to Thailand, and the benefits that Thai exporters  gain from the ongoing trade war between the US and China.

For the outlook of Thailand's enterprise HDD exports in 2019, KResearch expects that the growth of enterprise HDD shipments will decelerate after investors had hastily expedited their business deals   earlier. Moreover, enterprise SSD has been increasingly used for data storage at the corporate level in lieu of old systems. In addition, the exports of consumer electronics HDD[1] and the external HDD market are likely to slow down because these products will be replaced by cloud storage.

KResearch views that the Thai HDD exports will continue to expand in the future and peak in 2020 before shrinking by 4.5 and 6.6 percent in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The contraction is in line with a drop of computer HDD exports due to lower demand for computers in the global market and the transition toward SSD technology, which will change the landscape of the storage industry in the future.

[1] Consumer electronics HDD market includes game consoles, CCTV cameras, navigation devices and video recorders etc.
