KR-ECI began to recover in May 2020, easing concerns about future income, employment, and savings

คะแนนเฉลี่ย

The KR Household Economic Condition Index (KR-ECI) improved in May 2020, rising to 36.1 from 35.1 in April 2020, due to reduced concerned about income and employment following the government’s gradual easing of measures during phase 1 and 2 in May 2020. KResearch also conducted an additional survey on changes in household spending patterns before (February 2023) and after the COVID-19 pandemic (May 2023). The survey found that Thai households have increasingly shifted to using online platforms, with 27.7% of surveyed households ordering food via mobile applications more frequently. However, 38.5% of households, primarily residing in rural areas, had never ordered food through such applications. When asked about their views on the new normal, 36.4% of households viewed it as a transition to a fully digital society and economy, while 26.1% believed that businesses would adapt to working from home primarily.

The 3-month Expected KR-ECI improved from 33.4 in April 2023 to 35.9 in May 2023, due to reduced concerns about income, employment, and household savings for the next 3 months (June-August 2023). This followed the government’s gradual easing of lockdown measures, coupled with the low number of new COVID-19 infections and indicating a positive signal for the overall Thai economy in the near future.

KResearch views that the economic and living conditions of Thai households will recover at a slow pace during the second half of 2020, though significant vulnerabilities will remain (on an assumption that there will be no second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompts the government to introduce lockdown measures again). Therefore, the government must prioritize economic recovery measures and employment to support the weakened purchasing power of Thai households affected by the COVID-19 pandemic after the relief measures have expired.
