Government approval of a feasibility study on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to support industrial carbon sequestration

  • The Cabinet has approved a study of the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in the Upper Gulf of Thailand. The project is expected to enable effective carbon sequestration from the industrial sector by 2034, create more than 11,000 jobs, and support carbon storage of up to 10 million tons of CO₂ equivalent per year, representing approximately 3.7% of Thailand's total carbon emissions.
  • KResearch expects the main beneficiary industries to include iron and steel, cement, and aluminum, which are sectors with high carbon emissions. The development of CCS will also help support adaptation to the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

  • Industrial operators can prepare for CCS adoption by: (1) developing a carbon footprint that distinguishes CO₂ emissions from energy use and from production processes; (2) applying CCS only to unavoidable CO₂ emissions from production processes, rather than installing CCS across entire facilities; and (3) enhancing the value of low‑carbon products through the verification and certification of carbon intensity.
